“I get an exhilarated feeling from the audience and the singing, I do like to sing. It’s a lot of fun, you know, with good orchestration. The whole thing is kind of a romp, which it should be”Judy Garland (July 1, 1961)
The extraordinary, exciting musical orchestrations for those shows — as well as those from her earlier and subsequent triumphs on stage, recordings, television, and motion pictures — were specifically prepared for Judy by the best arrangers in the business. As she herself once said about her many melodic associates, “There are none better,” and the roster of Garland orchestrators is undeniable proof of her statement. One can’t reference all of them here, but they included Nelson Riddle, Mort Lindsey, Conrad Salinger, Gordon Jenkins, Ray Heindorf, Harold Mooney, Jack Cathcart, Skip Martin, and Norrie Paramor — with vocal arrangements provided by such musical master-workers as Roger Edens, Kay Thompson, Saul Chaplin, and Hugh Martin.
There’s no question that Judy Garland, her repertoire, and its presentation have long since come to be regarded as timeless and iconic. Their stature – and enjoyment – are unsurpassed by any other entertainers, songs, and arrangements in history.
